Think little and often

Robotic mowers generally maintain grass through frequent cutting, leaving small clippings on the lawn. They are not intended to tackle an overgrown plot in the same way as a suitable conventional mower. Initial preparation, seasonal growth changes and periods of wet weather can still require manual intervention.

Measure the actual grass area rather than the entire property. Then note disconnected lawns, narrow corridors, tree roots, flowerbed edges and places where wheels might lose traction. A simple open lawn can be easier to maintain than a smaller, fragmented garden. Keep a plan for trimming edges that the blade cannot safely reach.

Choose how the boundary is defined

Wired systems use a perimeter loop to establish the work area, with model-specific arrangements for islands and routes back to the charger. Installation takes effort, and later landscaping can damage or require moving the wire. The benefit is a boundary method that does not depend on a clear satellite view throughout the lawn.

Wire-free systems may combine satellite positioning, correction signals, cameras or other sensors. RTK, or real-time kinematic positioning, uses corrections to improve satellite-based location estimates. Buildings, dense tree cover and placement of any reference station can still matter. Ask for a site-suitability assessment rather than assuming “wire-free” means installation-free.

Read slope specifications carefully

Manufacturers may express slopes as percentages or degrees; these are not interchangeable. Percentage grade describes vertical rise divided by horizontal distance, multiplied by one hundred. Check whether a quoted limit applies inside the work area or at the boundary, where turning and stopping can be more demanding.

Traction also changes with wet grass, soil, wheel condition and direction of travel. A mower capable of climbing a dry central slope may be unsuitable near a steep drop or pond. Use the barriers, setbacks and installation measures required by the manual. Electronic boundaries are not a substitute for physical protection where an escape could cause harm.

Plan around people, pets and wildlife

A robotic mower contains cutting blades. Keep children and pets away while it operates, and do not rely on object recognition to detect every animal or toy. Inspect the lawn before a run, removing stones, branches, cables and other hazards. Stop the machine using its prescribed procedure before approaching or handling it.

Prefer daylight operation and avoid dusk or night schedules, when nocturnal wildlife may be active. Daylight does not remove the need to check the area. Follow local wildlife guidance and pause mowing when animals are present. Disable operation before lifting, clearing a blockage or servicing blades, exactly as the manufacturer instructs.

Check the whole installation budget

The purchase price may not include boundary materials, professional installation, a reference station, connectivity subscriptions or a sheltered power arrangement. Ask for an itemised current quotation covering the actual garden. An outdoor supply must be suitable for the location and installed in accordance with local electrical requirements.

Charging position affects access, cable routing and return paths. Separated lawns may require a supported multi-zone route or manual transport. Security features such as a PIN, alarm or location reporting have different account and connectivity dependencies. Ask what still works if a subscription ends, a mobile signal disappears or the manufacturer changes its service.

Leave room for maintenance and winter

Inspect wheels, the cutting assembly and accumulated grass according to the maintenance schedule. Replace blades with the specified parts and method; do not improvise sharpening or fastening on a design that calls for replacement. Cleaning permissions vary, so do not assume the underside can be pressure-washed or even hosed.

Before storage, follow the battery and charging instructions, clean the machine and protect any outdoor components as directed. Check the availability of batteries, blades and local servicing before buying. If the garden needs major boundary work for a small time saving, delaying the purchase may be sensible. The whole-home buying framework helps weigh installation effort against the chore you actually want to reduce.
